Kahurangi Dance Company

Wow, what an amazing performance. The singing was beautiful, the games were fun to learn and watch. One of the performers was very funny and shared some entertaining jokes. We learned about Matariki and were taught a simple waiata about Matariki. Those of us who attended had a great time.

Our Wonderful Calendar Art!

This year for Calendar Art we decided to use Mexican Folk Art and Aboriginal Art as our inspiration. We loved how colourful the Mexican art is and celebrations about 'Day of the Dead' really interested us.

The traditions and celebrations in Mexican homes and cemeteries during the Day of the Dead seem strange, if not incomprehensible. There is mourning and rejoicing; sadness and silliness - woven together into one emotional fabric.

To Mexicans, it's like welcoming the return of a dear friend or relative, who moved far away and visits just once a year. Mexicans try very hard to be with their families for this fiesta, as the living and the dead gather for the most complete of family reunions.

After looking at many examples the children in the class decided which type of art they would try. Everyone was asked to draft their drawing and try colours that they wanted to use. Once that decision was made they were given their good copy of card to complete their masterpiece.

Check out their incredible work!

Health Curriculum

Next week on Tuesday we have the opportunity for our girls from Year 6 through to Year 8 to meet with our Health Nurse Ann Knipe. The focus of the session is to give the girls the opportunity to discuss and learn about periods and manage the day to day routines. A notice has been sent home and I will also share the link to the notice below.

Week 2 and 3

Wow, what a busy couple of weeks we have had here in Totara 2. At the end of last week we had Grandparents Day which was fantastic, we were lucky to have a few Grandparents visit our class during the day.
We have also been very busy working on our Calendar Art. The class were given the option to either focus on art based on Mexican Folk Art or Aboriginal Art. Miss Power found quite a few really cool examples on Pintrest that she shared with us.
Also this week we had our Athletics Day on Wednesday, we walked down to Anzac Park at 1pm and started the first round at 2pm. There was some great sportsmanship shown and participation.

Totara 2 Country Study Shared Lunch

Country Study
*Totara 2 were really excited to be working on a country study. There were lots of different countries chosen and many different reasons why people chose that place. We loved learning about new cultures and places around the world. Today we shared our learning with others in the class. Also as a fun way to end our topic we had a shared lunch with food from the countries that we were studying... It was YUM! Here are a couple of photos of the delicious treats that we sampled today.

BOOK WEEK !!!

A few weeks ago we had Book Week.We had to get our Door Display ready for the competition that we have between the syndicates. Ours was based on the book "Wizard of Oz".We were lucky enough to win against the other classes in team B!. Here are some photos of our finished door display.

On the outside the witches legs stick out through the door with a Sign saying "Ding Dong the witch is dead". We made the house out of Popsicle sticks connected together by string.

On the inside we had the yellow brick road with a sign saying all the different places. By the door there were the lollipops made out of plaited material, crape paper and cardboard. On the cabinet we stuck a hot air balloon made out of string and colored paper.

Hanging from the light we made flying monkeys out of black paper and string.

On Friday was Book Character day. We all dressed up in our favourite characters to share at assembly. All the teachers came into the hall dressed up as characters from Harry Potter. They even preformed a little skit for us! Here is a photo of the class in their costumes.

Here's a closer look at some of our costumes

Totara 2 Art.

This is a small selection of some amazing art that we completed this year. We created these pictures to tell others about us.  We used images and words that are important to us. We first with 3 circles in the middle of  the page. We filled the circles with patterns and designs. The art was coloured in with oil pastels and we then cut out the silhouette of an animal.
